Welcome back! We hope that you were able to enjoy the holidays together with your family. The Christmas holidays are such a special time for all of us to be reminded of God’s never-ending desire to see a world of peace and happiness for all His children. As we look back over the activities of the first part of the school year, we would like to take the opportunity to express our appreciation for your support and involvement. We hope that your child(ren) are well rested and ready to invest themselves into their academic work in the new year.

The Virtue of the Month for January is Responsibility. As we begin 2012 let us seek to instill in our children a deeper level of responsibility in their personal and social lives. This month on January 16th we commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who out of such a sense of responsibility led the civil rights movement in America at the ultimate cost of his life. Because of his work and devotion, African-Americans were finally able to win many rights long denied them and take their place as equals among the citizens of the United States. May our students inherit his example of responsible leadership in their own future lives.

Spelling Bee
On Dec. 23rd the 4th through 8th grade students took part in the first round of New Hope School’s annual Spelling Bee. Six students made it to the final round which will be held at 9:15 am on Friday, January 13th, to which parents are welcome to attend. They are Janelle Gimay, Takumi Kadowaki, Maanav Shah, Natalie Adam, Richard Adam, and William Takahashi. The ultimate winner will have the privilege of representing our school at the Regional Spelling Bee being held at Fairleigh Dickinson University in March.

New Students
This month we are welcoming 12 Korean students to our school. We are happy to welcome these students from abroad, whose presence contributes to the international and intercultural experience of all of our students.

Martial Arts Class
The 10-week traditional Japanese martial arts course (Koryu) begins next Friday, January 13th, 3:30-4:30, to be led by one of our parents, Mr. Luis Hernandez. Final, final chance to sign up!

SAT Preparation Course
This is a professionally-taught 10-week course for high school students that will be offered here at the school on Saturdays from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm for a fee of just $225, or $25 per session (much less than the standard rate). May God bless your family in the new year!
